BILTna 2018 Thursday Night Function: City Museum

As you all know BILT loves to go offsite for interesting and unique Friday Night Functions. We love beautiful architecture. We love sculpture. We love to be inspired. We love adventure!

The 2018 will be very different in three respects:

  1. We’re going offsite on Thursday night (not Friday)
  2. You must not (under any circumstances) wear your lanyard / badges.
  3. We’re going to City Museum

You’ll be terrified as your kids dare you to follow them as they climb through this!

But don’t worry – you’ll be given custom BILTna wrist bands (and maybe a flashlight) Yeah yeah…I know, flashlights are sooo passé. Trust me…you don’t want to get lost in these caves.

Caves…of course there’s caves! And a five story slide. Maybe hold off on the drink till you’ve gone down.

We’ve done museums before. This ain’t one of those kinds of museums. I promise you three things:

  1. You’ve never been to a museum like this EVER
  2. If you don’t bring your kids and they find out from your photos, Twitter feed, Facebook posts and then you’re going to come back (which is going to be expensive).
  3. You’ll bring your family and the kids will beg to go back while you’re busy at the conference. Which is awesome!

I can hear it now…the shuttle buses full of crying children, up wayyyyy past their bedtime and upset because they have to go back to the hotel. :)

Drop into Beatnik Bob’s for pinball and to marvel at the largest underwear in the world.

Walk around and humbly ask yourself, “How would I have done this in Revit?” It’d be tough. Face it…some things just have to evolve.

This is a slide. A very, very long slide.

From Wikipedia:

City Museum is a play house museum, consisting largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects, housed in the former International Shoe building in the Washington Avenue Loft District of St. Louis, Missouri, United States.

Opened in 1997, the museum attracted more than 700,000 visitors in 2010.

The City Museum has been named one of the “great public spaces” by the Project for Public Spaces, and has won other local and international awards as a must-see destination. It has been described as “a wild, singular vision of an oddball artistic mind” and compared to the similarly individualistic Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles.

I’ve been fortunate to have traveled a bit and I assure you that this is one of the most interesting interactive adventures in the world. The sculptural constructs start on the outside, continue on the inside with multistory slides to help you get back to ground level (rather than have to climb all the way back down).

That’s right…there’s a train.

We’ll have the entire place to ourselves till 11pm, including food, drinks and more.

Solution: Bring your families to BILTna 2018. T-shirt and jeans required! :)

Fearless leader Wes Benn survives the long, dark tunnel and sculpted caves.
