We Are The Champions!

We are dedicating the blogs over this week and the next, to the victors of our Competition. The two categories we showcase this week are Innovation and Integration.

For those who don’t follow our Competition closely, here’s the quick low-down. We run a competition (across all our regional Conferences), that provides a chance for our delegates to showcase a recent project they’ve worked on. The criteria? Well there aren’t any specific criteria, so to speak, as long as your project is something out of the ordinary and/or solves some design or construction problem that has provided significant benefits to the project, team and/or client. Our Competition seeks to reward such efforts.

Now that we have given you that brief, let’s get started on our winners. The first category is, Integration. This category seeks to promote entries that best demonstrates the coordination of all disciplines within a single project.

The winning entry for the Integration category was submitted by Paul Hudson from Archaus in Wellington, New Zealand. The description of his entry for this category, is as follows:
“Each discipline’s Revit model (Architecture, Structure, MEP) was rendered separately in Revit and re-assembled in Photoshop. The opacity and extent of each layer was tweaked in Photoshop and overlaid to produce the final image.”

The runner-up for this category was submitted by Russell Strange from AECOM in Melbourne, Australia. The description of his entry for this category, is as follows:

“Example working of multiple services coordinated in an operations-centric building.”

The next category that we will showcase in this post is Innovation. This category seeks to promote entries that best demonstrates the efforts of the delegate or their organisation to push the boundaries of what is possible using today’s tools.

The winning entry for the Innovation category was submitted by Scott Crichton from Architectus in Queensland, Australia. The description of his entry for this category, is as follows:
“The premise is simple: “Can we build a conceptual building out of Lego in Revit?” A simple question but the solution requires a bit of creative thinking.
Whilst simply applying a material to elements will give a similar effect, I wanted to really push the software to see if I could actually build a model out of Lego Blocks. So why not try a 50-storey tower! Using a combination of Adaptive Components nested into Curtain Panel Pattern Based families hosted to Divided Mass Surfaces provides the base for the design, Dynamo provided the power to randomise the block colours to give a more realistic appearance. 3Ds MAX was purely used to produce a few quick internal renders to give my Revit a break from processing all of those blocks, ; most of the renders are straight out of Revit.
Nearly half a million Lego blocks later, here is the finished product.”

The runner-up for the Innovation category was submitted by Paul Wintour from BVN in Sydney, Australia. The description of his entry for this category is as follows:
“This project demonstrates how multiple design software can be used whilst still achieving an integrated BIM model. Revit was chosen as the primary authoring tool. Preliminary massing studies were done with Grasshopper and Ladybug. This informed the agile façade which was generated using adaptive components with instance parameters to define their ‘openness’. The ‘structural tubes’, which act as new bracing elements within the existing building, were generated with Grasshopper and Karamba, which provided integrative structural analysis. The results of this analysis were then fed into Galapagos which is an evolutionary solver to optimise the shape. Dynamo and Flux were then used to complete the round trip by transfer the geometry back into Revit. Dynamo utility scripts were also used to organise the model by renumbering rooms, doors, and sheets, etc. The project demonstrates both technical and computational innovation and is presented in a way that clearly conveys the design intent.”
