You have a client that is asking for the world in regards to BIM. They want everything in regards to data in the model. You jump through hoops and do exactly what they asked for; all the while stressing that you will not deliver exactly what they are asking for. In the end you turn over the model with the data and they do nothing with it or ask you for something else. Oh yeah, and they want it for free.

Does this sound familiar? How frustrating is this?

Some of the topics that will be touched on in this discussion are:

  • A brief history of how data was used since my inception into the modeling world, starting from the early 1990's to the present
  • What has worked with model data
  • Why does it sometimes feel like we are going backwards in time, when we are trying to improve deliveries with data
    • What can we apply today from what we learned in the past
  • Why can't data be software agnostic, or can it be
  • Can processes we learned in LEAN Construction help gather and deliver data
  • Ideas to obtain customer values for the project turnover

We are getting to a time where it seems an entire project can be designed, coordinated, managed, executed and turned over to the client from a single location, using a single file. The biggest flaw is the lack of early communication, resulting in more conflicts later in the design process. Even if this cannot be achieved the way we imagine it, we need to change our workflows to help get us closer to delivering on this concept. We need to figure out how to share data, rather than start over by regathering it in our own way at each handoff.

During the discussion we will touch on these topics in effort to get all of us inspired to do more to create better sharing of the data we collect and not start over each time we make a transition during the projects.

Data-Driven Interoperability for Synchronous Design and Interrogation

Recent advances in software data exchange paradigms have made interoperable workflows more seamless than ever as an integral aspect of model-driven project delivery and digital prototyping culture. This presentation will begin with a comparative analysis and overview of shifting trends in interoperable workflows, from Revit Categories via third party Grasshopper add-ins, to the transfer of lower-level geometry types made possible by Dynamo, to the dynamic exchange of generic model data via Flux, whose cloud-based visual programming editor and JSON representation of building information will be demonstrated.

When the medium of data exchange is sufficiently generic, ad-hoc tactics of geometry transactions can be replaced by a more robust strategy of database queries. Generic, web-based data exchange also allows for the integration of new data sources beyond traditional building information. Integrated task management will be addressed through the demonstration of the Proving Ground’s Trello add-in for Revit and Rhino, and examples of serialization of complex data types will be presented as a means to new methods of remote solving, tool deployment, collaboration, scaling, and version control.

However, as interoperable workflows become more sophisticated, they tend to have an adverse effect on model accessibility. Therefore attention should now be given to simplified, bespoke user interfaces, heads-up displays, and information dashboards to hide the inner-workings of complex scripting and visual programming routines, while reinforcing the flow of data from upstream parameters to downstream deliverables. Demonstrations of relevant tools will include the Dynamo Customizer, HumanUI, and Conduit, which all work to increase users’ access to the model, no matter their computational skill, team role, or point at which they engage in the project.

The presentation will conclude with the various successes and pitfalls of the Woods Bagot Global Design Technology Team’s integration of interoperable workflows on several globally significant projects over the past year, emphasizing the importance of being able to simultaneously design, document, and deliver at any stage of the project through the mastery of generic, consistent data queries.
